A love story at the center, and an ending that leaves your heart full.
In a romance novel, the relationship between the leads is the main plot, not a side story. Readers know they can count on an emotionally satisfying ending: a "happily ever after" or at least a "happy for now." That promise is what lets the genre take you through so much heartache, banter and longing along the way.
Romance is one of the best-selling genres in the world, and it comes in every flavor: modern-day rom-coms, Regency ballrooms, small-town love, fae courts and more. This site also includes a few beloved love stories that end with tears instead, marked as tearjerkers.

HEA means "happily ever after": the couple ends up together for good. HFN means "happy for now": they're together and hopeful at the end. Genre romance always ends with one of the two. Tearjerkers on this page don't.
Romance ranges from closed-door (sweet, nothing on the page) to very steamy. Look up a book's content and spice rating if that matters to you.
